Author’s Talk

Lucinda Trew

Like most writers I know, I write to unwind the knots and smooth the frayed edges of life. It’s how I make sense of things, or at least make peace with the life events that may never make sense.

When my mother was diagnosed with cancer and needed chemo and radiation therapy, we had the option of going to the big-city hospital in uptown Charlotte, or the smaller version in Monroe, North Carolina. We chose the latter. It was the right decision; not just in terms of the fine care she received, but the time we were able to spend commuting back and forth, taking in the seasons, slowing down for farm vehicles, railroad crossings, and conversation. Car time is good talk time, and we made the most of our long commute. The destination wasn’t one we desired, but the journey was lovely.—Lucinda Trew
