"Doing the Math" by Howard Pearre
– some things don’t add up
A honorable—but not honor—student miscalculates his chances of being drafted into the Army.
Former SSG Howard Pearre received an “early out” in 1969 to return to college, earned degrees in history and rehabilitation psychology, and later also served with the NC National Guard. He is retired after a career with NC Vocational Rehabilitation and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. He received an honorable mention for a short story “September, 1957” at the 2020 International Human Rights Arts Festival and is a member of Winston-Salem Writers.
